I am a black historian, so naturally I read primary sources for research purposes. This book is an easy, short, and simple read. I read the book in about 45 minutes! Short primary sources like this one is an excellent way to pique interest in history.

It is fascinating reading the account, especially after watching rise of a nation. There are differences, the Nat in the movie is more sympathetic. The real Nat is purely driven by blood vengeance, and otherwise shuns even his own people, except insofar they are useful to him. He was undeniably brilliant, and could have perhaps helped the cause of his fellow slaves by turning his great talent elsewhere. That being said, his ruthlessness makes sense. Any half measures and he would have done even less. But, the plan itself was insane. There is no rational reason he should have expected a different outcome than what happened. So, Nat was propelled by a true belief that he was working out a divinely ordained plan to deliver the slaves as the prophets and judges did in the Old Testament. The signs he notices are similar to some of the plagues in Egypt: the blood on the crops and the eclipse. He also tried escaping his fate as the Old Testament characters did. But I cannot say it was indeed divine, nor even diabolical. Nat ultimately was driven insane by his insular brilliance and thirst for vengeance.

This is the text of the original pamphlet published by lawyer Thomas Gray in 1831, and not the 1967 William Styron novel of the same title.Five stars because it's an important historical document.Note that there are two Kindle versions. One has a plain cover (ASIN B004TQZIM6) and the one I have has an image of a ship on the cover (ASIN B01M5ISROO). The latter version has some interesting images tacked on at the end, which were not part of Gray's original pamphlet. Gray published the pamphlet to give the curious residents of Virginia some insight regarding the slave rebellion. Some historians have questioned accuracy of Gray's account, although Gray claims that he wrote exactly what Turner confessed. Gray does put his spin on it, and it's confusing when, near the end, without warning, the first-person voice of Turner suddenly switches to Gray's first-person commentary about Turner's actions.*** SPOILER ALERT ***I was expecting Nat Turner to explain that mistreatment by slave owners led to the rebellion. Instead, he states that his actions were inspired by spiritual visions he had. This may be true, if Thomas Gray did not omit any parts of the confession. One could also view this as propaganda if Gray removed any comments Turner may have made about experiences with cruel masters, and/or the injustice of slavery leading to the rebellion.Perhaps it was more palatable to the frightened white populace to believe the "insanity defense" -- that strange visions made Turner lead a murderous rampage. If Gray had suggested, via Turner's alleged confession, that slaves were reacting to maltreatment, he may have been vilified for this. Gray had to show appropriate horror at the murder of numerous whites, including women and children, with many slaughtered while asleep. It was horrible, and I imagine Turner and some slaves viewed this as a war tactic ("collateral damage"), as they were on their way to attack the town of Jerusalem. We may never know the truth about the Turner's intentions in leading the revolt, but it is a documented fact that the roving bands of slaves killed at least 55 white folks, and roughly 200 slaves were killed in the suppression of the rebellion.

Great quote by Nat Turner. It does seem to characterized his view of himself. He leaves out the fact that Christ and not his disciples were crucified.Lincoln's comment about the metaphysical dimension of the war would seem to include Turner's revolt even though the revolt preceded but pointed to the Civil War. "For it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to the man by whom that offense cometh."It does seem fitting that, despite praise at the time, Styron's fictional account is not looked to today to help understand the incident or the man. This book provides a glimpse into Nat Turner thoughts. "The Confessions" although flawed hints at layers of agony in Turner's Rebellion. I am very glad I read it.My view is that Turner's acts were suicidal, murderous, and took a great deal of courage. His acts showed great courage but were far from heroic. Turner's revolt was, in fact, a slave revolt. "The Confessions" are helpful in looking at one slave revolt. It does not characterize all slave revolts.I found Turner's skill at becoming invisible pretty amazing. It seems obvious that he got it or learned it from his father. Maybe that skill accounts for why even today it is hard to see him.

This is the confession of Nat Turner given to a Mr. Grey, a local lawyer, while Turner awaited trial. It is the primary source on the actions of Turner in his rebellion. Though much discussed the Turner rebellion has little real documentation beyond this confession, court documents and news accounts at the time. A careful reading of the confession reveals an individual of doubtful sanity. It is interesting how seceding generations have reimagined Turner to fit different political agendas over the years since his death.

The book was great. It really draws you into it emotionally & mentally. And I enjoyed how Nat Turner saw through the shenanigans of the white manipulation through religion to control the slaves even more.

This was a very quick read. It's interesting to learn of Nat Turner's thoughts before, during and after the rebellion. I do think the author put his own spin on some things, but it was an interesting read nonetheless.

Turner's confession contains a collection of memories as well as a catalog of death. This includes some of his abilities, visions as well as some of his early history. It also includes his growing belief in a vision that lead to many deaths. Including his.
