Michele Elizabeth Lee has worked for over 30 years in the integrated arts field as a visual arist, curator, administrator, educator, and writer. She has a MFA from the University of Southern California and a BA from Antioch College. She is a native of Oakland, California, who was raised in a family of traditional healers from the South. She currently lives and works in her native Oakland, where she teaches art in a public school. She has two adult children, Milon and Nora.

Beautiful book, chockful of valuable, herbal information from the African American healing tradition. As an Acupuncturist and an herbalist, enjoy expanding my knowledge base in different healing cultural traditions.

I absolutely love this book!!!!!!!! It is such a wonderful resource. Both the interviews and the remedies sections are an excellent reference. Great read for anyone interested in African American history and how we used herbs as medicine.

Its great to see a book speak on the traditions of old healing. Although I understand the importance of some modern medicine, so much of it has side effects that will leave you worse off than when you started. Black people have been healing themselves with what they had at hand, for centuries out of necessity. I got this book and started through it and I know that I will refer to this book over and over again. Great book!

This is an important book, preserving the life and works of "granny" healers and backwoods medicine from a tragically overlooked population. I enjoyed every bit of it!
