 A Geek in Japan is an interesting and insightful guide to all who are fascinated by the Japan and its culture.The book covers aspects of Japan that might be familiar to most, such as manga, anime, and also deeper subjects such as their working environment, society views, practices and more. There are many little nuggets of information in each chapter, such as riding the subway, why people wear face mask,preparing tea, and even a brief travel section.The best part of the book is the text that explains why Japanese behave the way they do. E.g. The low crime rate, hard workers, employees who typically stay at a single company their whole life, after office hours interaction, family dynamics, the meticulous nature of people, etc. Once you understand that, you sort of get the context to the bigger picture to their society.I'm not sure how accurate the text is, but several reviews on Amazon commented on that. I guess you have to understand that this is written from the view of a foreigner staying in Japan not for the purpose of studying the country. What's written mostly are based on observation.The book would have been even better, more insightful with proofreading and commentary from actual Japanese people, because there are times where I go "Is this for real?".Author Hector Garcia has packed a bit of everything to make it an enjoyable read. I have a number of travel guides and books on Japan, I have several language books as well. I've gotten interested in Japanese culture through manga and anime, which while it may be fiction, it often tells things about a culture I find fascinating. Most of the travel books are more from a tourists perspective on what to see, where to eat, with a few cultural references thrown in on the given areas visited. This book is more of a culture book which explains or at least tries to demystify the what and who is Japan and Japanese. From the origins of some of the more quirky customs to the influence of past history and the modernization of Japan.Along the way you learn a few words and terms and what they stand for. Some interesting cultural behaviors like Honne and Tatemae, which don't translate very well in Western terms but in general explain a lot about the people. of Japan. Other cultural topics explored include Bushido, the Real Geisha, Martial Arts, Zen, and the use of the Swastika called the Manji symbol in Japan. It explained the use of wearing masks, which I though was just not to spread germs, but is mainly used as a filter for all the pollen released in cherry blossom season. Food and other pastimes are explained as well, each in a nice concise little story fashion conducive to easy reading.They also explore the culture I like the manga, and the anime, and the craziness of it all. The festivals, the shrines and what the different beliefs represent. It does this all is such a way, it's like reading a good book you can't put down. The book does a nice job of weaving its tales through a historical perspective of Japanese history and without being boring doing so. Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn more about Japan or just someone who likes other cultures. Be forewarned if you know nothing about Japan and you read this book, you can be their will likely be a trip to Japan in your future.

Better than expected, even after reading reviews. It's rather scattered, but in a good way. Photos and graphic design are fantastic, and it's like reading the best wikipedia out there for a huge variety of facets of Japanese culture. I'm headed back to Japan for my 3rd time next month, and this has got me even more excited as well as more knowledgeable about the hows and whys of Japanese culture. It won't tell you which hotel to stay in, but it will make your trip more enjoyable. A must for anyone traveling to Japan with an interest in contemporary japanese culture.

For as long as I can remember my son has had a fascination with Japan. When I saw this book I knew I had to get it for him. He recently travelled there for the first time. He was in hog heaven. He tells me he wishes he had this before he went because it is such a wealth of information. When the package reached him in Taiwan where he lives it was his favorite piece of the birthday collection, even over the anime t-shirts. He reached for it the first night and couldn’t put it down.

I have always been drawn to Japan, it's culture and its people and it is in my top 5 list of places I want to visit one day. Naturally, I have read much over the years about Japan and its culture, but this has to be one of my most fun reads to date. The author touches and expounds on things from the very distant past to the modern present day seamlessly, with humor, insight and elegance that makes this a joy to read. The many photographs (with thoughtful yet to-the-point accompanying captions) dispersed throughout are such a pleasure to view and nearly transports the viewer into that moment. There is not a dry or boring passage in this book, it is thoroughly entertaining with many educational aspects as well. One of our teens, who is studying hiragana and katakana, as well as the spoken Japanese language, loves this book equally, so there is a lot of sharing going on both with this book and through discussion. I recommend this to anyone interested in gaining a deeper insight and perspective into fascinating Japan presented in a unique way both through words well-written and engrossing photographs.

What a fascinating take on a beautiful culture. I found myself traveling to Japan a few times a year for work. While I love guide books- I was looking for a little more. Wow is all I can say! Hector covers every aspect of the people and really lets an outsider see inside. I found helpful tips for work, fun facts about family / home life, views on anime, and even recommendations on places to visit. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to know more about Japan.
