#2,073 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
I hate to write negative reviews but this was just a ridiculous and unbelievable plot, with terrible, one-dimensional characters and nothing redeeming. The protagonist / narrator was particularly annoying, but I pressed on, hoping for a killer plot twist. When it came, it was so bad I nearly threw my phone down in irritation at having forced myself to read on to that point.
Listen, I am not a prude but I feel like it is not fair or really cool to not give readers a heads up about the incredible amount of highly sexual content of this book.Parts were incredibly uncomfortable (again not a prude) but because I was not expecting it. You will accidentally stumble down the rabbit hole and not see it coming. I slapped my forehead for my lack of seeing the foreshadowing of things to come. Those who dislike f bombs will really need a pass on this. Yes, there are some but to me they pale in comparison to some of the frank talk in the book. (and by frank I mean talk that I would never in a million years utter out of my lips in front of anyone-maybe I'm a secret prude) I will not give a spoiler here because the words are probably on a list of things you can't write it a review (wash your mouth out with soap, make your mama blush words). I kept reading the book but feel it needs a warning to those who will feel GUT PUNCHED and suckered by not knowing what they are getting into.OK, now you know what to expect. But what about the book???? A great deal of hand wringing and self doubt. Like A LOT. Too much. After half way through I was sick of hearing about how our heroine Kat felt. Her internal dialogue is churning, churning and churning. My favorite anxiety quote: "It's ok if Doug (husband here) pities me, just a little, but if he knew everything, he'd be disgusted. And I couldn't live with that."How about a quote from the meat of the suspense: "Just because your paranoid doesn't mean nobody's after you."But really there was not ENOUGH suspense or at least I was too preoccupied by all the overpowering emotion baggage from Kat.This is Stepford Wives in a Trans-Urban twist. In Dec of 2016 a book titled The Missing by Caroline Eriksson was one of the Kindle Firsts for the month. I disliked that book because the suspense was bogged down in all the over wrought hand wringing self doubt that killed the book for me from getting anywhere and sadly it is shades of that for me here. The book will be loved by those who can overlook some of the things that just didn't sit with me. Not enough suspense for a book billed as suspense, the fry pan in the face with the sex talk that would make Dr. Ruth blush. F bombs not included.
Honestly, I should have stopped reading halfway through, and I wish I had, but if my suffering can help just ONE person choose a better book, it will not have been in vain. Kat is the worst- her biggest trait is insecurity, and oh brother is that shoved down your throat the ENTIRE BOOK. Unfortunately, the book is almost exclusively from her point of view, so we only see her interpretation of supporting characters ( She doesn't know them yet, but she likes them. Wait, maybe THEY'RE the one out to get her? She doesn't trust them, but maybe she should? It gets old) and the "neighborhood secret" (Spoiler alert: The secret is swinging. Neighbors doin' it with neighbors. Kat is pretty sure she doesn't want to, but is too worried to tell her husband out of fear he might find another woman attractive. I just saved you 4 hours.) The premise is interesting, the twists are more like slight curves, and this book doesn't live up to its promise.
I'm glad this was a free download through Prime because I didn't particularly enjoy it. The main character Kat is very annoying, because of the never-ending tide of insecurity and self-doubt. While there's a childhood trauma responsible for her behavior, her repeated failure to address it makes it difficult to sympathize. The plot also feels a bit forced and unpolished. Honestly, I almost stopped reading a few chapters in because Kat irked me from the beginning. Now I do disagree with the other reviewer who claims to not be a prude but was offended by the foul language and sexual content. There are about 5 f-bombs in the entire book and the most vanilla description of sex I've ever read. Cable television is more graphic than this book.
Was a very messy book, going back and forth and not explaining what had happened to her until the very end.
This book reminds me of a creative writing project poorly written by a teenager. It is incredibly outlandish and written in a very one-dimensional, childlike fashion.
It started out OK, not great but OK. By about half way through I was beginning to realize the main character is a complete idiot. By three fourths of the way I was literally shaking my head and laughing. This has got to be one of the dumbest books I’ve ever read. The ending is so far fetched and so ridiculous I can’t believe anyone thought to themselves “yup this is how I’m going to wrap up my book.†The author asks too much of its readers, it is just dumb.
