From the Publisher
This second edition of Learning Perl, designed for those who seek a rapid working knowledge of Perl and sporting a new foreword by Perl author Larry Wall, fully covers the world of Perl, version 5. In this new edition, program examples and exercise answers have been radically updated to reflect typical usage under Perl 5, and numerous details have been added or modified. In addition, you'll find new sections introducing Perl references and CGI programming. Perl is a high-level, multipurpose language. It is used in diverse system administration tasks, while also playing an endless variety of roles in other areas. These range from data reduction and report generation to distributed computing and assorted auxiliary roles in software development. Perl has even encroached upon the territory of C and other programming languages. Learning Perl, written by a leading Perl instructor, provides a systematic, step-by-step, tutorial approach to learning the language. There are numerous short code examples punctuating a relaxed, informal, and precise tour of all the main features of the language. In addition, each chapter contains exercise problems, together with their solutions. Anyone who works through the book will be capable of programming with a broad and productive range of Perl features. For a comprehensive and detailed guide to advanced programming with Perl, read O'Reilly's companion book, Programming Perl.

As a hobby web developer and Linux user, I have looked at and installed many programs written in perl. I never really thought about learning perl because their are so many free resources on the 'Net and it just seemed complicated. The only problem is that you can never seem to find the exact program with the exact function you desire. I have paid programmers to make programs for me and purchased pre-written programs for my web sites, but I still always wish for one more function.I bought this book only in hopes that I would be able to hack existing programs to fine tune them more to my needs not to write my own. Guess what... It's not as hard as I thought. This book starts you off building a fun little script in the first chapter and by the end of the second you are writing three of your own. Each chapter brings you painlessly closer to understanding the basic principals of perl. By the end of the book I was able to write some simple, but very functional scripts on my own. While this book does NOT claim to teach you to be a programmer and only covers the basics, it sure teaches you to think and read in perl. If you are thinking about it yourself don't look any further.
This book is an excellent way to ramp up on Perl quickly. It takes you through the in's and out's of Perl at a wonderful pace and covers most of what you need to know. This is the book to get if you're new to Perl and need to learn it quickly. The 200 or so pages are readable in less than a week. However, there are a few important things to note. This is not a standalone book. You will need to get the Programming in Perl book as well to serve as a reference guide. Also, this book assumes basic Unix knowledge. If you have no exposure to Unix, a couple of things (very minor though) might be a bit baffling. If you've played with Unix, then this book is a breeze.I managed to ramp myself up on Perl and start writing some sweet scripts within a week. I also bought the Programming in Perl book and now I turn to that book for the more heavy duty stuff. The long and short of it: this is the best beginners book around for Perl.
I had been stumbling around Perl for a while now, modifying downloaded scripts and writing a small CGI script or two but I never actually sat down to _learn_ the language. Picked up this book based on the excellent recommendations here and it's definitely paid off. Burned through it in a day and by the evening I was finishing off my first real Perl script (with the next one started the following morning). Don't know how useful it is for non-programmers but if you have a programming background, especially with scripting, you'll find this an excellent way to get up to speed. It doesn't cover everything but it's not supposed to. It quickly lets you hit the ground running, and that's a good thing.
If you haven't done much programming on a *NIX box, then this book is for you. If you have, but just need an intro to Perl, it's still pretty good, but very light reading - you might as well buy a copy of Programming Perl at the same time, so you can just shift over when you're done. Especially good if you have no programming experience whatsoever, but don't fault the book for not teaching you *NIX - it's not meant to do that.
This review is for the second edition of this book.Learning Perl is a good book for beginners. But alot has changed since 1997 (when it was published). If you want to learn the "basics" of Perl and are just gonna play around with Perl, this is one of the books for you. If you need to learn Perl for use in a production environment, you should look at some of the newer O'Reilly books on Perl. This book is just too old and outdated for me to give it more than 3 stars
Great product
I knew nothing about Perl; this book is well constructed and the author's sense of humor makes a somewhat serious subject, pleasant to read. My next book will be "Programming Perl" by Larry Wall which is heavily quoted in this book. Unless you are already very familiar with Perl you can't go wrong with this book.
This book is great. It's a very readable and informative book. The chapters are set up semi-tutorial with exercises at the end that test your knowledge. I was able to create several cgi programs after only reading the first chapter. It's also full of tips that urge you to further delve into the cool world of perl.
