I was drawn into this book from the moment I read the first paragraph of the preface. The writing is so vivid that I felt like I was right there experiencing the daily events as they unfolded. The daily joys, struggles, tragedies, and suspense made this a page turner. I was introduced to a culture so vastly different from my own and was left with a new appreciation for cultural traditions and human connections as well as a deeper awareness of the bondage that traditions can impose. This book gave me a new awareness and conviction of the bias and judgement that naturally comes from viewing the world from ones own perspective.

Ruby's World works on so many levels. As a mystery, it is a page turner. The author takes us by the hand and we experience the journey with her. And, despite all the positive and joyful times, there is foreshadowing - more is happening than meets the eye. The unknown subtext lurks, waiting for us as it waits for Karen. The description of the landscape, the culture, the vibrancy and mystery of Africa comes splendidly alive. It is nearly 20 years since I was in nearby Zimbabwe, and the text dipped into all my memory banks. I was back reliving my time there and my love for the soul of the continent. The narrative is deeply personal and yet universal. We watch our journeyer awaken to so much that she had not understood; it is almost like watching a a photographic film develop, step by step, before our eyes. There is deepening understanding along with both growing heart ache and profound compassion. It is breathtaking to realize how much connects us as human beings and yet separates us by difficult-to-fathom cultural differences. And there is an epilogue filled with wise perspective about the situation and the journeyer's growth. She says, "By the time I returned home, I was untethered from my 'life before Africa." Soulful reflections and the promise of a rich harvest of wisdom.

I've never read a true story such as this. From the first page, it held my attention. This lady knows how to write a book! Everything she described I could vividly see in my mind, the colors, sounds and experience of South Africa and personalities of everyone she encountered. Karen Baldwin is an amazing woman. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to read Ruby 's World.

In Ruby’s World the reader is introduced to the Zulu culture through the author’s emotional experience to a world very different than her own. Unprepared for teaching, uneducated to the culture of the Zulu people, the author blunders through several weeks of good faith attempts to teach English to rural children. The contrasts with her expectations and reality create an interesting tension throughout the book and makes for an interesting read.

Ruby's World is a candid and valuable insight into the difficulties that can be encountered when members of different cultures try to pursue a common objective. The author embarked on her journey into Ruby's World with the best intentions and total dedication to helping educate Zulu children. Her account is an enlightening description of the day by day exhilarations and frustrations she encountered in trying to help local children learn English and understand the larger world outside their immediate environment. Her experiences while living with her host family, and interacting with local school staff provide an object lesson in the practicalities of trying to translate the best intentions into effective action. Ms. Baldwin's observations and conclusions are especially pertinent to cross-cultural assistance programs. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in gaining insight into life in Zulu society in South Africa.

This book reads like the best mystery story. Ruby's World kept me in its grip until the very last page. It describes a strange experience of a mature American woman who travels to Africa for a few short months to teach English to village children. Every day involves creating more bridges from her world to the world of the Zulu and solving practical problems like figuring out how to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night with no bathroom in your room. It's easy to imagine that good will and effort are all we need to integrate very different cultural perspectives. Karen's story sets the record straight. There are many worlds within this one world of ours -- and the chasms that divide them are often greater than we imagined. The author grapples honestly not only with what happened and why, but also with who she is and how she might have contributed to a surprising, painful, and potentially dangerous situation. Ultimately, what might have been a few short interesting months away from home in an exotic place turned into a puzzle she'll probably wrestle with for the rest of her life. How the events were set in motion will always remain a matter of perspective cloaked in mystery. And isn't that how it is with the most memorable stories of our lives?

This was an exceptionally interesting book - made even more so when I met and talked with the author at a signing event in the Phoenix area. It shows the pit falls of jumping into a culture one knows very little about and not having any sponsorship group in country to help in frightening times. A single white woman accepts the invitation of a principal of a rural village school in Africa. Her living conditions are very sketchy, but the best available at the time. Being a very self-reliant woman in a culture where tribe and gender make a BIG difference, leads to jealousy and trouble!! I recommend the book and learned a good deal about taking off on one's own without back-up.

I love Ruby's World! Karen spoke to my soul and I felt like I was travelling with her. This book was a quick read in that I read it in one sitting...Not because it was short, but because I could not put it down! I learned so much about the culture and I felt privileged to be included in Karen's process and decisions as she met the day to day dilemmas of answering a call to show up and serve.
